MATIC WINES

The Matic Wines winery comes from the Štajerska white wine region in the extreme northeast of Slovenia and is run by Matija Žerjav, who is simply called Matic by his friends and family.

Matic chooses to cultivate its 9 hectares of land exclusively with organic and biodynamic methods. He prefers these methods because he firmly believes that wine should be made that way. He wants his children to be able to play in the vineyard and one day, should they choose, he would be happy if they followed in his footsteps and worked the same land, hills and valleys that he worked.

Matic is a young, motivated and thoughtful winemaker. He is part of a younger generation of winemakers who are not satisfied with the status quo. While he understands and respects history and the methods passed down by his grandfather, he is also not afraid to take risks and think outside the box.

Matic uses only native yeasts when fermenting the wines. He practices biodynamic farming methods and bottles all wines by hand with love. He uses minimal SO2, only when necessary. Having recently converted the winery to solar power, his hope is to be certified as carbon neutral in the coming years.

Grapes from Matic

Matija Zerjav has a selection of crisp white wines for every day, but also impressive, more complex wines.

All his classic wines see stainless steel, no oak, and feature the trademark racing acidity known for the region of Štajerska.

Matic has also been a strong proponent of Šipon (the local name for the grape Furmint) and believed he could create a fantastic sparkling with it.

His bottling of Mea Pet Nat shows the true strength of the grape and we are happy he chose to do this.

Additionally, Matic is experimenting with longer skin-contact wines, aging wines in clay and concrete, and other more ancient methods of winemaking. The future is bright, and we are happy to be along for the ride with Matic.
